Como represents a classic “streetcar neighborhood”, built along the important Como-Harriet line, the longest streetcar line in the Twin Cities and a major link between Minneapolis and St. Paul from the 1910s to 1954. Clusters of small businesses grew at streetcar stops throughout the neighborhood. Como Avenue had a busy streetcar line from the 1890s to 1954, with the Como-Harriet cars and the Intercampus cars that carried University of Minnesota students from the East Bank campus on the Mississippi River to the St. Paul campus. Thousands of Minneapolis residents rode the Como-Harriet line to reach the State Fair each summer. Como-Harriet Streetcar Line History blog post Sources of additional information: |
