Humphrey served as Minneapolis Mayor, U.S. Senator & Vice President. He lived at 890 19th Ave SE in Como while he was Mayor. He ran for mayor in 1943, 1945 and 1947. After building a coalition of citizen, labor and business groups, Hum phrey led reform of the Minneapolis gov ernment and police in order to combat civic corruption, and later gave the renowned 1948 “Sunshine of Human Rights” speech that helped spark the U.S. civil rights move ment of the 1950s and 1960s. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1948, 1954, 1960, 1970 and 1976. In 1964 he was elected Vice President of the United States. He lost the 1968 election for President of the United States to Richard M. Nixon. He married Muriel Fay Buck on September 3, 1936. |
