A Cordial Welcome Minneapolis Tribune, February 3, 1877 The early residents of the city were made happy last evening by the advent on the streets of Hon. Calvin A. Tuttle, now of Two Rivers, Morrison county, in this state. Few men contributed more to the development of Minneapolis than Mr. Tuttle. He donated large sums of money in the early days of the city for every enterprise that was deemed necessary for the improvements in and around the falls. He gave several thousands of dollars to the university in order to get the institution under way. He was a large stockholder in the lower bridge, and furnished large sums of money to get steamboats up to the falls. The mass of the present population of this city have no idea of the vast sums of money donated by the early settlers in order to get a proper commencement here. Mr. Tuttle came to Taylors and St. Croix Falls in 1838. He was the first territorial treasurer; a member of the constitutional convention, and has been honored with numerous other offices, which he filled with every satisfaction to the public. |
