excerpt -

"Candidates for city council in the 2nd Ward sat down together for the first time in the campaign Monday night to discuss mass transit, the University and related problems in the Southeast Minneapolis community. The discussion was part of an aldermanic forum held at Hope Lutheran Church . . . before about 30 people and many vacant seats.

Carrolyn Anderson, Marty Anderson, Jack Baker, Tom Johnson and Jack Lindgren expressed a diversity of opinion on all issues. A sixth candidate, independent Nels Christianson, did not appear. . . .

Johnson, the DFL-endorsed candidate, criticized freeway construction as disruptive to the Southeast community. "The immediate effect of the I-35W construction has been division of the Southeast neighborhood, the loss of housing and a park, air, noise and visual pollution," Johnson said. . .

All five candidates offered sharp criticism of careless University expansion into the Southeast community. Carrolyn Anderson offered three alternatives to force the University to cooperate and consult with the community concerning expansion plans, including community input, using the office of alderman as a spearhead of community involvement with the University and getting the Minnesota Legislature to cooperate with the community in blocking careless expansion. . . .
